Mix Bus Compression: How to Find the Pocket

For me, it’s about the bounce.


Keep it simple to start:


30 ms attack. Auto release. 2:1 ratio.


Bring the threshold down until you’re getting somewhere around 2–4 dB of gain reduction.


That’s usually where the track starts to come alive.



Threshold = How Deep You Go


As you lower the threshold, you’re asking the compressor to act on more of the signal.


That’s where the sound starts to tighten up – more together, more solid.


But go too far and you lose the movement.



Attack = Where the Bounce Lives


The attack is key.


At 30 ms, you’re letting more of the transient through before the compressor really clamps down.


You hear the front of the sound, the groove, the movement.


That’s the bounce.


Go faster – 10 ms, 3 ms – and you start clamping down on that initial hit.


The track gets tighter, and can start to feel flatter.


Not a bad thing. You just need to know how far is far enough.



Ratio = Focus


The ratio controls how firm that grip is.


Lower ratios, like 1.5:1 or 2:1, keep things subtle.


Higher ratios hold the dynamics more firmly.


The track starts to feel more focused.


The question is how controlled the track needs to feel.



The Pocket


What I’m really listening for is what happens around 2–4 dB of gain reduction.


That’s the pocket.


That’s where everything starts to feel like it belongs together without losing energy.



Auto Release


Auto release usually works well here.


It adapts the release behaviour to the material, which is useful when you're compressing an entire mix rather than one predictable sound.


A fixed release can make the compressor pump beautifully with the groove, but it can also fight it if the timing is wrong.


Auto gives me a good starting point when the aim is movement rather than an obvious compression effect.



Sidechain = What the Compressor Listens To


On club material, there’s one more control worth paying attention to.


The sidechain filter.


A big kick can contain enough low-frequency energy to trigger the compressor harder than everything else in the mix.


That can mean every time the kick hits, the whole track gets pulled down with it.


Sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

Sometimes it isn’t.


A high-pass filter in the compressor’s sidechain lets you reduce how much that low end influences the detector.


You’re not EQing the kick out of the mix.


The sidechain filter doesn't change what goes through the compressor – it changes what the compressor reacts to.


Try bringing it up somewhere around 60–120 Hz and listen to what happens.


That can let you keep the glue and movement without having the entire mix breathe around the kick.


And you don't necessarily want to take the kick out of the equation completely.


Some of that movement can be part of the bounce.


You're just deciding how much you want the kick to drive the compressor.



What Bus Compression Is Doing


On a single sound, compression is often about controlling that sound.


On a mix, you're changing the relationship between everything.


The kick hits and the compressor responds.

The snare hits and it responds differently.


But because they’re all passing through the same compressor, that gain movement affects the whole mix.


Everything starts interacting through the same gain movement.


That's where the sense of glue comes from.



Try This on Your Mix


Set the foundation

Put a compressor on your mix bus.

Start with 30 ms attack, auto release, 2:1 ratio.


Find the pocket

Lower the threshold until you see somewhere around 2–4 dB of gain reduction.


Now move the attack.


Go faster and listen to what happens to the front of the sounds.


Go slower and listen to what comes back through.


You’re looking for the point where the track tightens up, but the transients still give it the movement you want.


That attack time will be different from track to track.


Find the focus

Once the attack feels right, try increasing the ratio.


As you go higher, listen to how the mix starts to feel more controlled and focused.


You might prefer 2:1. You might find 4:1 gives the track exactly what it needs.


The point isn’t the number.


It’s finding how much focus the track wants.



Shape the feel


Too flat? Try a slower attack.


Not connecting enough? Bring the threshold down a little further.


Connecting, but still too dynamic? Try a slightly higher ratio.


Overcooked? Back the threshold off.


If the whole mix feels like it’s being pulled down every time the kick hits, start bringing up the sidechain filter.


Listen for the point where the mix opens up, but the kick is still contributing to the movement.


Think of It Like This


Attack decides how much of the front gets through.

Ratio decides how focused it becomes.

Threshold decides how deep into the mix you go.

Sidechain decides what gets to drive it.


Too little – nothing connects.

Too much – everything collapses.


Right in the middle – that’s where the life is.
