Why So Many Great Club Kicks End Up Around G

This didn't start as a theory.


It started with an analyser and a lot of other people's records.


We'd pull up a track where the low end just worked – where the kick sat properly and everything above it still had room – and go looking for the fundamental.


G kept coming up.


Not every time.


But often enough that it stopped looking like coincidence.


So I went looking for why.



The Window


The usable range down there has a lower limit that matters more than most people expect.


At standard tuning:


  • Eb1 – 38.9 Hz

  • E1  – 41.2 Hz

  • F1  – 43.7 Hz

  • F#1 – 46.2 Hz

  • G1  – 49.0 Hz


You can work down to around E or F and still get real weight.


Below about Eb, you're increasingly relying on the playback system being able to reproduce it properly.


G1 sits at 49 Hz – far enough above that lower boundary to reproduce reliably, but still low enough to feel like sub.


Go higher and nothing stops working.


You're simply trading some of that sub depth for more punch.


That's the interesting part.



How Low Can You Go?


Most club and touring subwoofers are designed to work efficiently down to somewhere around 35 to 45 Hz.


Below that range, the output starts dropping away surprisingly quickly.


A kick at 49 Hz sits comfortably above that region on most systems.


At 41 Hz you're getting closer to the point where reproduction becomes more system-dependent.


Below 39 Hz, plenty of playback systems simply won't reproduce the fundamental properly.


Those frequencies don't disappear from your mix just because the playback system can't reproduce them.


They're still taking up headroom.


They're still hitting your limiter.


So every time you tune lower, you're asking more of your mix while getting less back from the playback system.


That's why lower eventually stops sounding deeper.



Where The Punch Actually Lives


None of this means the fundamental is doing all the work.


A surprising amount of what we hear as punch sits between 80 and 120 Hz – a range that almost every playback system reproduces well.


That's why plenty of enormous-sounding kicks aren't especially low at all.


They simply contain the right information further up the spectrum.


The fundamental gives you extension.


The harmonics tell your ear it's there.



Final Thought


So the point isn't to tune every kick to G.


It's that great records leave clues.


An analyser won't tell you how to make a great kick.


But it will show you where great kicks actually live.


Load up twenty tracks you love.


Find the fundamental.


Write it down.


Patterns will appear.
