How I Use Tilt EQ to Move Sounds Forward or Back in a Mix

Tilt EQ is pretty simple and basic, but I find it essential in mixing.
It’s basically a tone balance.
You’re boosting one side of the frequency spectrum while reducing the other around a centre point – the pivot.

Turn it one way and it lifts the top while reducing the bottom.

Turn it the other way and it adds weight to the bottom while reducing the top.
What I like about it is that it doesn’t feel like you’re carving the sound into pieces.
It moves the sound as a whole object.
Brighter will often bring something forward, while darker can push it further back.
That’s why I find tilt useful when a normal EQ starts making something feel too picked apart.
It’s good with correcting kicks.
I’ll move the tilt until I find the point where the kick connects just right against the bass and the rest of the drums – not too heavy and not too clicky.
On a reverb return, I’ll tilt it darker to push the reverb behind the dry sound without chasing individual frequencies.
If a sampled loop feels older, duller or heavier than the newer elements around it, a small tilt can bring them into the same world.
I’ll often try a tilt before reaching for a low or high shelf.
A shelf changes one area; a tilt makes the whole sound move.

I started with the Tonelux Tilt.
That was the plugin that turned me on to the technique, and the simplicity is still the appeal.
You turn one control and listen for the point where the sound settles into place.

These days, Decapitator is my quickest option.
Along with the Low Cut and High Cut on either side, it gives me a quick way to shape the overall balance without opening a full EQ and overthinking it.

With a fixed tilt, the pivot is usually somewhere in the midrange – often roughly between 650 Hz and 1 kHz, depending on the design.
That works well for a lot of sounds, but sometimes I want control over exactly where the balance changes.

That’s when I’ll move to Kirchhoff-EQ. It lets me position the pivot, so I can decide which frequencies sit on the heavier side and which sit on the brighter side.
Tilt Shelf creates two opposing shelves around the pivot, while Flat Tilt keeps a constant slope across the whole audible spectrum.
The only thing to watch is level.
A tilt can genuinely change the output depending on where most of the source’s energy sits, and a brighter balance can also feel louder.
I’ll level-match and bypass the EQ to make sure the new balance is actually better, not just louder.
Tilt EQ is basic, but that’s the point.
When a sound doesn’t need fixing and just needs to move, it’s often the quickest way to put it in the right place.
