Flanging, Derrick May and the Wait for the Bass.
Flanging is one of those sounds that pulls me straight back onto a dancefloor.
Derrick May’s remix of “Praise” is a standout for me.
That whole intro, with the flanging on the percussion leading up to the bass dropping, is so exciting and absorbing. The moving flanger helps to keep the intro hypnotic.
Masterful!
I can still picture being on the floor at Renaissance in Mansfield, never knowing exactly where the bass would drop.
But what is flanging actually doing?
It blends a sound with a copy of itself delayed by just a few milliseconds.
Too close together to hear as a separate echo, the two versions interact: some frequencies reinforce each other, while others cancel.
This creates a pattern of peaks and dips called a comb filter.
As that tiny delay changes, the peaks and dips move through the sound.
That’s the sweeping, hollow, metallic quality we recognise as flanging.
Phasing sounds similar, but it shifts the phase of the copy rather than delaying it, which gives it a softer, more swirly character.
The controls shape that interaction.
Speed determines how quickly the sweep moves; depth determines how far it travels. Feedback sends some of the delayed sound back through the effect, making the resonances more pronounced.
The balance between the original and processed signal changes its strength.
In the interactive demo above, press Listen and start with the delay at zero and the mix at 50%.
The two signals line up exactly, so you should hear the original sound, or just a touch louder.
Nothing is cancelling yet.
Now slowly increase the delay.
The comb filtering appears: the sound thins out and takes on a hollow, slightly nasal colour as the peaks and dips form.
You can see them in the display, and hear them as a fixed tone.
Press Start sweep.
Those peaks and dips now move, and that's the classic flanging motion.
Next, raise the depth.
The sweep travels further, so the movement gets bigger and more dramatic.
Then bring up the feedback.
The resonances become sharper and more metallic, and at high settings the sound starts to ring.
Push both towards the extremes to hear how much character the effect has.
“Neurotic Behavior (Mayday Reproduction Mix)” is another example.
At different points you can hear the flanger's intensity and feedback changing. That sharper, ringing quality from the demo is what gives the percussion its bite, hollowness and tension.
It's the same effect that first pulled me in on "Praise", pushed hard so you can hear every part of it.
It's a great sound in its own right, though in my own music I use it a lot more subtly.
Back in the demo, turn the mix down, keep the depth shallow, the speed slow and the feedback low.
The copy is now much quieter than the original, so the peaks and dips are shallower and the sound doesn't obviously "flange".
Instead, a static loop starts to breathe.
Hi-hats gain a gentle shimmer, pads feel like they're slowly shifting, and drums get a touch of life without anyone being able to point at the effect.
And flanging has uses beyond movement.
Stop the sweep and you’re left with a fixed tonal colour.
Hearing Eskmo suggest the UAD MXR Flanger on bass made me think more about that side of the effect – using it to shape the character of a sound.
On bass, that fixed comb filter reshapes the overtones, bringing out a growl, a nasal quality or a metallic edge.
A short delay with moderate feedback is a good place to start, and depending on the settings, it can make the bass feel thicker or hollow it out.
With “Praise,” though, what stays with me is the anticipation.
That percussion, the room, and the feeling of waiting for the bass. Decades later, I can still feel it.
