What phase, polarity and timing actually mean – and five ways to make kick and bass work together.



The first time I heard about phase was through what DJs call “phasing” – playing two copies of the same record almost exactly in time.


Make tiny movements with the pitch – slightly faster, slightly slower – and you hear the sound change.


Parts of the track become hollow, disappear and come back.


It was a skill I learnt, and once I could control those micro movements with the pitch, I could control the records around that sweet spot of cancellation.


A great effect.


Technically, that two-record effect is closer to flanging.


Later, I encountered phaser effects in the studio, then phase alignment when recording and mixing.



So what actually is phase?


Phase describes where a waveform is in its cycle.


When we talk about the phase relationship between two sounds, we’re comparing how their cycles line up.


So if one sine wave is 90° out of phase with another at the same frequency, it is offset by a quarter of a cycle.

Two identical waveforms, perfectly aligned and played at the same level, can combine to produce a signal about 6 dB higher than either one alone.


Invert the polarity of one – turn its waveform upside down – and those same perfectly aligned signals cancel.

With different sounds and timings, some frequencies can reinforce, while others cancel.


That’s where a hollow sound, shifting tone or disappearing bottom end can come from.



Before AI: Isolating Vocals and Instruments with Phase Cancellation


Long before AI stem separation, phase cancellation was used to isolate parts of a track.


If you had an a cappella that matches exactly, you could invert its polarity and line it up with the full mix to cancel the vocal, leaving the music.


An exact matching instrumental could cancel the music and leave the vocal.


A slightly different version won’t cancel cleanly.



A Solid Bottom End: Five Ways I Adjust Phase


Kick and bass often share energy in the same low-frequency range.


If they play at the same time and that energy partially cancels through phase issues, the track can lose its weight – even though both sounds feel strong on their own.


The same can happen when layering two kicks.


Adjusting their phase relationship can help the bottom end feel more solid.


But kick and bass sounds aren’t usually identical waveforms.


Different notes, changing pitch and the way a synth retriggers mean one adjustment won’t necessarily work throughout the whole track.


These are the five approaches I use.



1. Try the polarity flip: Ø


Often labelled “phase invert”, this is the familiar Ø button found on many channel strips and plugins.


You’ll find polarity controls in Logic Pro’s Gain plugin and Ableton Live’s Utility, with separate controls for the left and right channels – to invert a whole stereo signal, flip both.

In practical mixing terms, the Ø button reverses the polarity of the entire signal, flipping every sample.


So if two related sounds feel weak together, flip the polarity of one and listen.


Sometimes the bottom end suddenly feels much more solid. Sometimes it gets worse.


This simple tool has been doing the job for years.


It’s well worth checking before reaching for anything more involved.

2. Move the audio manually


Having both clips on the grid doesn’t mean their waveforms are in phase.


Moving a clip in time changes the phase relationship differently at each frequency.


So nudging a clip and pressing Ø won’t necessarily sound the same.


Nudging gives you fine control over timing, so you can align the phase relationship manually.

With different kick samples, their cycles and pitch envelopes may still behave differently, so one adjustment won’t necessarily align everything.


I watch the waveform, but I listen for the weight and punch and see if it’s enough.


If moving the audio starts to change the groove, that matters.



3. Little Labs IBP


The next tool I use is the Little Labs IBP Phase Alignment Tool from UAD.

This is good for when kicks, bass and any bottom end presence feel right in timing, but their combined bottom end still needs work.


Moving one waveform might improve the weight while taking something away from the groove.


IBP lets me gradually adjust the phase relationship while listening to the sounds together.


It has selectable 90°/180° phase-adjustment ranges and a separate delay control for fine timing adjustments.


Its phase adjustment is frequency-dependent, rather than applying one identical phase shift across the whole sound. Little Labs IBP manual


What I like is being able to turn the Phase Adjust control and feel how the sounds interact, finding the sweet spot where the bottom end feels solid and everything sits how I want it to.


Until UAD make it native, I only get to use it when I work on my old system.



4. Sound Radix Auto-Align

When manual adjustments aren’t getting me the result I want, Auto-Align is another approach I try.


Using the kick as the send, I can phase-align other related sounds to it through the RECV setting.


It reports the detected timing relationship, so I can sometimes flip polarity or reproduce the suggested sample delay directly in the DAW, then remove the plugin. Sometimes it’s bang on, other times there’s not enough information to find the spot.


It works best when the signals share related information, so it isn’t a guaranteed way to make any two sounds fit together.


It can still be a good tool for the job, though.



5. Sidechain


If none of the above works out, then there’s always sidechaining.


It isn’t a phase fix, but it solves the same problem.


I put Soothe on the bass and use the kick as the sidechain source to shape space around it.


This lets the bass ease around the kick, giving the kick room to come through.


Soothe gives you a lot of control over how much space you create.


Whichever sound you want to lead – Kick as source, Bass as source, Lead as source – the main thing is, one is the trigger and the other shapes around it.



Five Approaches, One Aim: A Solid Bottom End


I use all five approaches.


Sometimes moving a waveform does the job.


Sometimes the polarity flip is enough.


Other times, IBP, Auto-Align or sidechaining gets me closer to the sound I’m after.


The aim is a bottom end that feels solid while keeping the timing and character of the sounds.
